5 Signs You're Wearing the Wrong Bra Size (And What to Try Instead)

Most people who are wearing the wrong size aren't wearing something dramatically wrong — they're wearing something close, that's been quietly uncomfortable for so long it started to feel normal. Here are the five clearest signs, and what each one is actually telling you.

1. The band rides up at the back

If you can see the band climbing up your back in the mirror, or you keep tugging it back down through the day, the band is too big. The band should sit level all the way around, parallel to the floor, doing most of the work of holding the bra in place — not the straps. Try: going down a band size, and up a cup size to compensate (for example, from 36C to 34D). This swap is called sister sizing, and our sister size chart lists the options.

2. The straps dig into your shoulders

This feels like a strap problem but is almost always a band problem — if the band isn't providing enough support, the straps end up carrying weight they were never meant to. Try: checking the band fit first. If the band is snug and level and the straps still dig in, the straps themselves may need adjusting or the style may simply not suit your shape.

3. The cups gape, wrinkle, or don't fill out

Loose fabric at the top of the cup, or a cup that doesn't sit flush against you, means the cup is too big for that band size. Try: going down a cup size while keeping the same band, or trying a different style — some shapes simply work better with a different cup construction.

4. You're spilling over the top or sides

Bulging at the top of the cup, or at the sides under the arm, is the clearest sign a cup is too small. This one is easy to miss if you've gotten used to adjusting your top to hide it. Try: going up a cup size. If the band then feels loose, go up a band size too and compensate by going down a cup — remember, sister sizes move in opposite directions.

5. You're constantly readjusting it through the day

If you're reaching in to shift things, pulling the band down, or tugging straps every hour, something isn't sitting right — a properly fitted bra shouldn't need constant attention once it's on. Try: a full re-measure (see our guide to measuring at home), since this is often several signs at once rather than one isolated issue.

The fix, in short

  • Band riding up → size down the band.
  • Straps digging in → check the band first, not the straps.
  • Cups gaping → size down the cup.
  • Spilling over → size up the cup.
  • Constant readjusting → re-measure from scratch.
