Delicate fabrics like lace, satin, sheer hosiery and silicone-trimmed hold-ups don't respond well to a standard wash cycle. A few small habits make a real difference to how long they last — and to how good they still look after a few months of wear.
Washing lingerie
Hand washing in cool water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent is the safest option for bras, lace sets and anything with embroidery or delicate trims. If you do use a machine, put items in a mesh laundry bag on a cold, gentle cycle, and avoid the tumble dryer entirely — heat is what breaks down elastane and causes underwire and lace to lose their shape fastest. Fasten any hooks before washing so they don't snag on other fabric.
Washing hosiery and hold-ups
Hand washing is gentler on sheer hosiery and on the silicone grip strips used in most hold-ups, since machine washing and tumble drying can both dull the silicone's grip over time, making the band more likely to slip. Lay hold-ups flat to dry rather than hanging them by the band, which can stretch the elastic unevenly.
Storage that protects the fabric
Avoid folding bras flat or stacking them under other items, as this crushes the cup shape over time; stacking cups inside one another, or lying them side by side, keeps the shape intact. Keep hosiery away from anything rough — jewellery, rough fabric, or a drawer edge can snag sheer fabric and start a ladder before the item is ever worn. A dedicated lingerie drawer with dividers, or the original packaging, works well for this.
Rotating what you wear
Wearing the same one or two pieces every day wears out the elastane faster than rotating through a wider set, since elastane needs time to recover its shape between wears. If you wear hosiery often, having a few pairs in rotation rather than relying on just one will noticeably extend how long each pair performs well.
A quick care checklist
- Hand wash where possible, or use a mesh bag on a cold, gentle cycle.
- Never tumble dry delicate lace, embroidery or silicone-trimmed hosiery.
- Dry hold-ups flat, not hung by the band.
- Store bras by stacking or placing cups side by side, never folded flat.
- Rotate your pieces rather than relying on the same one or two daily.
