Plus Size Lingerie: How to Find Bras, Corsets and Hosiery That Fit

Plus size lingerie should fit the way any lingerie does: a firm band, cups with no gaps or spilling, straps that stay put and fabric with enough stretch. The real difference is in the labels, which vary more between brands at the top of the range. Here is how the main labels work and what to look for in each category.

How plus sizes are labelled

  • Bras and cupped styles: band and cup, such as 40DD or 36GG.
  • Letter sizes: XL, 2XL, 3XL and up, which mean different things at different brands.
  • X sizes: 1X, 2X, 3X and beyond, used by Shirley of Hollywood, whose plus range runs to 6X.
  • Hosiery: sized by hips and height, so check the chart rather than your dress size.

Whatever the label, the measurements on each product page are the reliable guide.

Bras

Nudea is our widest bra range. The Sheer Deco Lift balcony bra runs to a 40DD band and up to a GG cup, and the Stretch Boss is a moulded full-cover bra with cups to G. For a fuller bust, a full-cover or balcony cut with a firm band usually gives more support than a plunge.

Lingerie sets and corsets

Irall's Madison lace suspender sets come in plus sizes in white and black. Shirley of Hollywood's red satin sweetheart corset, boned with a lace-up back, runs from 1X to 3X. Explore more in our plus sizes collection.

Nightwear

Shirley of Hollywood's peignoir set pairs a long tricot and lace gown with a sheer robe, in white in 1X to 3X and black in 4X to 6X. For everyday nights, the Irall Juniper is a sky blue satin nightdress with lace trim, cut in plus sizes. Our plus size nightwear guide goes into more detail.

Hosiery

Gabriella's plus range includes floral-top hold-ups in 15 denier and 20 denier, and the Rubensa 20 denier tights. Ballerina's 595 faux suspender hold-ups also come in plus sizes.

Fit checks that matter

  • The band: firm and level on the loosest hook, because it carries most of the support.
  • The straps: wider straps spread the load and are kinder on the shoulders.
  • Hold-ups: if they slip, check the thigh measurement on the chart, or switch to stockings with a suspender belt.
  • Stretch: fabrics with elastane move with you, while rigid lace needs the size to be exactly right.

Getting the size right

Frequently asked questions

What size is plus size lingerie in the UK?

Most UK plus size ranges start around a UK 16 to 18, but brands label it in different ways, from 2XL to 1X, so always check the chart.

What is the best bra style for a fuller bust?

A full-cover or balcony bra with a firm band and wider straps usually gives the most support.

Do corsets work for plus sizes?

Yes. Choose one with plenty of boning and adjustable lacing at the back, which lets you fine-tune the fit.
